1967 International Loadstar Build – Part 4: Flatbed Fab, Air Suspension Plans, and Steering Mods

In Part 4 of the 1967 International Loadstar build, the StealthBuilt team shifts focus from the interior to the back end—tackling flatbed design, preparing for air suspension, and resolving steering column clearance issues. With owner Allison on-site, it’s a hands-on session that blends form, function, and a little farm truck flair.

Custom Flatbed Design for a Classic Farm Truck

With the van chassis fully exposed and drivetrain prepped, Sam turns his attention to mocking up a flatbed. The goal: create a rugged yet clean design that honors the truck’s farm roots while leaving room for modern upgrades.

To do this, Sam repurposes original frame pieces from the van to fabricate forward mounts. Using 2×4 lumber, he and Allison construct a full-scale mockup of the future flatbed, complete with stake pocket considerations. The plan includes:

  • Steel frame base
  • Wood slat decking
  • Stake pockets for removable sides

This setup will provide a classic, utilitarian look while allowing for modular upgrades down the line.

Planning for Air Suspension

Allison has one request: slam the Loadstar. Sam begins rough calculations to determine how much drop they can safely achieve using the current frame geometry.

  • Front suspension gap: 11.5″
  • Rear frame clearance: ~6.5″ without a C-notch
  • Goal: 8–9″ of travel for a near-ground stance

Sam determines that a rear C-notch and some wheel well modifications are inevitable to tuck those wide tires and retain full articulation with air ride.

Ergonomics: Seat Positioning & Steering Column Retrofit

With the cab mounted and a test-fit square body seat in place, Sam checks for legroom and pedal placement. The original dash shape presents a clearance issue for the modern van steering column, which includes tilt and stalk controls.

The solution? Trim the dash, relocate the mount point, and build a custom bracket—making space for both the column and the driver’s knees. Bonus: Sam plans to pair the retro steering wheel with the modern column internals for the best of both worlds.

Steel Ordering & Stake Pocket Plans

After completing the mockup in wood, Allison records all measurements to translate the layout into steel. The final bed will include:

  • Precision-cut steel rails
  • Welded stake pocket sleeves modeled after a trailer frame
  • Added storage boxes for tools (and snacks)

Bonus Teaser: The John Deere Wild Card

At the end of the episode, Sam teases a new acquisition—a bizarre John Deere platform destined for an over-the-top future project. You won’t want to miss what’s coming.
